Smoked Salmon Tartare
Appetizer? Snack? Breakfast? Sandwich Filling? Recovery Protein? Yes and there is probably even more things you could do with a really simple and delicious smoked salmon tartare. I can see why it’s not in everyones repetoire each week since it can be rather expensive.
However, I’ve found a really good budget saving tip for when it comes to purchasing smoked salmon!!! Places like Whole Foods, The Fresh Market and other higher end markets make their very own cold smoked salmon. There is only a certain amount of days that you can sell seafood as fresh and keep on ice. So a lot of these grocery store will freeze the seafood at a cheaper cost for you and my favorite – smoke the fish for things like spreads or just on it’s own.
I can buy 8 ounces of wild sockeye smoked salmon from Whole Foods for $6.50. Now compare that to the fancy packaged ones that easily go for twice as much. That’s what I like to call a win!
Serving/Eating Tip: Place on toast with avocado. Toast points with cream cheese for an appetizer or top some cucumber rounds with it. Layer a piece of toast with cream cheese, tomatoes and salmon. You could add a poached egg to almost all of the options. And finally, you could just eat with some triscuits when you roll in the door from a long bike or run.
Storing Tip: It easily stores in the fridge for 2 days and you might be able to get 3 days out of it. It’s dependent on how strong you like the flavors to get.
Smoked Salmon Tartare
- 8 ounces cold smoked salmon
- 2 tablespoons finely minced red onion
- 1 tablespoon capers
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill
- 1/4 lemon for the juice
- Mince the red onion and dill.
- Next, you'll want to dice the salmon. Don't put it in a food processor. It'll get mushy.
- Now combine everything with the lemon and mix.
