Roasting garlic in the oven is probably has one of the biggest returns in flavor. This is especially the case since it’s one of the easiest cooking techniques around. Garlic on it’s own is an amazing flavor booster, but when it’s placed in the oven drizzled in olive oil, it mellows, sweetens and becomes a bit more complex.
It will transform the ordinary recipe into the extraordinary!
I like to make a few heads of roasted garlic every Sunday. This was I can have some ready in a pinch if I”m going to make something like my roasted garlic green beans with mint and feta as a side dish for dinner.
Start with a couple cloves of garlic and pre-heating your oven to 400F/205C.
Then with a sharp knife, you are going to want to cut the tops of the head off. Each head is different, but take a look to see where they all seem to end and slice there.
After you’ve cut the head off, place the garlic cloves on top of some aluminum foil. Then pour olive oil over them. You don’t want them to be bathing in it, but you do want it covered.
Next step is to make your own little garlic packet by closing up the garlic in the aluminum foil.
The place in the oven for an hour. After about 45 minutes I do start to check the garlic cloves. Maybe it’s the garlic, the amount of olive oil, humidity, oven, etc. but sometimes I do find that it can be ready in as short a time as 45 minutes, but if not, it’s still good to check on them. Once you see the color you are looking for, remove from oven and open up that little packet of goodness.
That’s all it takes to make roasted garlic in the oven.
If you start getting in the habit of making it once a week, you’ll be able to add a ton of flavor to recipes during a busy weeknight without adding in fat or calories!
