The other weekend Dwight and I discovered a national park in Belgium called Hoge Kempen when we were actually visiting Maastricht again. It is basically as close to the Netherlands as you can get so it wasn’t like we headed over to the French border. I decided to head back over there yesterday to explore the running trails and cycling roads… Yes, cycling roads.
Get this, Belgium has bicycle roads, just like roads for cars, right next to each other and sometimes on their own. It was so cool because at certain times you are in the woods, but on your road bike. It’s like the best of both worlds!
Now for the really awesome part: When the two roads become one road and the bikes must share with cars, the bikes get the right away if there is a sign with a bike on the road.
Seriously, how could I not go back and ride around all day?
Not only were their roads just for cyclists, there were beer stops along the way, just for the cyclists or maybe the hikers. True story.
The cycling culture in Belgium is amazing. The beer culture in Belgium is amazing. Belgium is amazing.
Speaking of beer culture…. I don’t think any trip to Belgium is complete without a pit stop to pick up some of their tasty beer. This is me we are talking about 😉
I see a few more trips over there before we head back to the states in May. It’s in a tie right now with the Netherlands as my favorite place. (Hint: Cycling is huge in the Netherlands too)
