I’m beginning to think that I’m just never going to be a long distance runner because….. I”m injured…. Again. However, with most of my injuries I can pin point exactly what I did and how I was stupid in letting it happen. Not so much with this one. I was having great runs and nothing was hurting. I mean, I had a tight hip but I was actually foam rolling, stretching and even taking those stupid rock hard balls to my ass and hip flexors, take some days off when I’d get a little twinge of something. You know, basically all that stuff I would never do before and eventually end up rightfully injured.
So, on Christmas Eve when Dwight and I were going to do an easy 8 mile run on the road from the house, I was blind sided by a seizing pain in my lower right back and hip. I was done. It hurt to walk back to the house. There as nothing dull about it, not like most of my other injuries. This was sharp. Then on another round of “I’m going to do something I never do” I took a whole week off. Not even the elliptical machine. After a week, onto the treadmill I went for 30 minutes and I was ok. Then off to the PT and he didn’t think it was SI issue and then off to the masseuse thinking that a bit of needling and rubbing would make me all better. NOPE! It got worse for a few days and back to do doing nothing. I’ve put in maybe 6 runs since xmas eve and they all end the same way, me in pain the following day or two. Ugh.
I’m pretty sure it is an SI issue brought on by a couple different things. 1. Super tight hip flexors. 2. Zero core muscles. 3. Being 10 pounds over weight. 4. And the straw that broke the camels back: Lots and lots of downhill running. I’m pretty sure if you took one of those away I would have been fine.
Now what? Well, I obviously can’t do Frosty Foot, I’m on the fence about Mitchell considering I can’t run, and am torn about Eugene. What I’m thinking is I’ll go ahead and stop the pitty party and get myself up to the gym to get on the elliptical and the stair climber to at least keep some semblance of running and uphill running shape. I’m already working on that whole no core muscle thing, I’ve put Dwight and I on an actual healthy eating plan and I’m getting massages.
There is a glimmer of hope I can at least finish (not fast) The Black Mountain Marathon and toe the line for a BQ at Eugene. I guess it really just depends on how the next 2 weeks goes.
