How to Eat Healthy While Traveling and Training
It’s easy to get in the habit of a bad eating pattern when you are traveling. I was lucky enough recently to head over to Germany for a few weeks. However, I was also right in the middle of Ironman training so it became that much more important that I figured out how to keep my diet on track while not having access to a kitchen and being in a foreign land. These tips kept me on track and eating healthy while traveling in the middle of Ironman training.
1. Scope Out a Local Grocery Store
When you first get to your destination, hunt down the closest grocery store. This will allow you to fill your room and mini fridge with healthy snacking alternatives like protein bars, fruit, granola, pretzels and whole grain breads for sandwiches.
2. Empty Your Mini Fridge
Most hotels have some form of mini fridge in them now. This mini fridge is your best friend. If it is filled with stock items from the hotel, empty it and let the front desk and the cleaning service know that you don’t want it refilled. Now that you have found a grocery store, fill the fridge with yogurts, fruits, vegetables for snacking and some hummus/dip of sorts and hard boiled eggs. Most grocery stores (even over in Germany) have hard boiled eggs in the fridge section.
3. Take Advantage of the Continental Breakfast or Buffet
This is a great way to start your day off right with a healthy breakfast. Choose foods like oatmeal, yogurts, fruit and whole grain breads. One of things I did routinely from my breakfast buffet was to make a sandwich of sorts for later in the day after a training session. Just because you are traveling does not mean you have to eat out at a restaurant every single time you eat.
4. Research Restaurants
I find that if you look for mediterranean restaurants like Italian or Greek restaurants, you have a better chance of being able to make healthy food choices. The Mediterranean diet is filled with healthy fats, lean prteins and lots of vegetables.
5. Stay Hydrated
Traveling and eating out at restaurants where you can’t control the amount of salt in the food, can you bloated and hungry feeling. Keep the fluid coming so you can negate those negative side effects.
